At the 9th NDN retreat it was noted that the low awareness of the contributor's guide made it less useful for new developers. It should be put somewhere very visible, like the readme that github displays when visiting that project.

I recommend adding this markdown snippet to the README.md file:
If you are new to the NDN community of software generally, read the
[Contributor's Guide](https://github.com/named-data/NFD/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md).
I would have done it myself, but it is unclear where to contribute changes to.
